Lesson Plan 2: "I Remember" Poem
- Curriculum Standard: ELACC5W1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons. ELACC5W4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. ELACC5W3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
- Technology Tool(s): Computers to type up their work & Padlet to post and share their work as a class
- Activities/Tasks: Begin by reading excerpts from Joe Brainard's book I Remember which holds pages and pages of poems about memories all starting with the phrase "I remember..." After reading from the book, students will be writing their own "I Remember" poem reflecting on many memories briefly. Students will create their poem about a range of memories then type it up using MS Word or Publisher with pictures, graphics, and fonts that are appealing and represent their memories. They will post their poems to a classroom Padlet and we will share as a class.
- Potential Challenges: I see their being challenges with students channeling their inner thoughts and memories and using them to create a poem. Some students will have to step outside of their comfort zone by sharing things about their personal lives and some students may struggle with writing and a creative writing style.
Lesson Plan 3: Travel Brochure Vacation
- Curriculum Standard: ELACC5RI1: Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. ELACC5W2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
- Technology tool(s): Computers for access to the internet and MS Word
- Activities/tasks: This activity the students will look through a collection of travel brochures from places like theme parks (Disney World, Universal, etc.), Museums (the Smithsonian, Kennedy Space Center, etc.), Zoos (the National Zoo, Sea World, etc.), or other cool new places and pick a place they would really live to visit. With the information from the brochures + data and statistics gathered from the internet, students will writing a persuasive piece compelling their parents or guardians to take them to their desires location.
- Potential Challenges: I see some students having difficultly taking their desire to visit this place and successfully word their thoughts into convincing arguments. In addition to helping with this writing style, I would advise students to use the internet to find synonyms for their commonly used words.
